# Environment variables

> Fill missing configuration, import values, and update a project's runtime.

Open `/integrations` in a project and choose **API Keys**. This tab of **Project setup** holds the project's environment variables: the values the code needs, detected from the code, plus any you add.

## Configure the project

1. Review the variables detected from the code and the provider instructions shown for them. Required values are marked.
2. Fill missing values, or add your own with **Add key**.
3. Review imported or inherited values and remove entries the app no longer needs.
4. Save and check the application's runtime status.

Sensitive values are masked with a reveal control. Saved values persist across detection scans.

Saving applies the configuration to the running project where available. A service that reads variables only at startup may need a restart; check the running app rather than assuming a save alone verified the integration.

`PREDEV_API_KEY`, `PREDEV_API_URL`, and `PREDEV_PROJECT_ID` are set by pre.dev and cannot be edited here; see [built into every app](https://predev.mintlify.site/coding-agent/built-in.md).

## Bulk import

Paste `.env` text or upload a `.env`, `.txt`, or `.json` file, or a screenshot. The importer matches values to detected variables and can add new entries. Review the result before saving, including environment-specific values and names that appear more than once.

## Shared values

[Workspace service keys](https://predev.mintlify.site/coding-agent/integrations/api-keys.md) provide reusable credentials, and team workspaces can supply shared values. The project's API Keys tab is where you review its concrete configuration. A workspace key change does not prove that every running project has picked it up.

## Missing configuration

The build can report missing variables and send a notification linking back to Project setup. Supply the values, resume the relevant task if needed, and verify the feature that depends on them.

Your pre.dev API key is not a project variable: it is on **Integrations → Built-in**, and apps receive it automatically. See [authentication](https://predev.mintlify.site/api-reference/authentication.md).
